It is a clear, colorless liquid with a pungent, fishy odor, and is highly flammable. UDMH is a derivative of hydrazine, where two hydrogen atoms have been replaced by methyl groups on one of the nitrogen atoms.

UDMH is a powerful reducing agent and is often used as a rocket propellant, particularly in combination with oxidizers like nitrogen tetroxide. Its hypergolic nature means it ignites spontaneously upon contact with the oxidizer, simplifying rocket engine design. This property has led to its use in various spacecraft and missile systems.

Beyond its propellant applications, UDMH has also been employed as a component in the synthesis of certain organic compounds and in some specialized industrial processes. However, due to its toxicity and carcinogenicity, its handling and use are subject to strict regulations and safety precautions. Exposure can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system, and long-term exposure is associated with an increased risk of cancer.
