CErtifiointi is a process that allows manufacturers to declare that their products meet the essential health and safety requirements for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA). The CE mark, a symbol that appears on many products, indicates that the product has been assessed by the manufacturer and is deemed to meet EU safety, health, and environmental protection requirements. It is not a quality mark, nor is it a certification issued by a third party. The manufacturer bears the sole responsibility for the conformity of their product.

The CE mark is mandatory for a wide range of products, including toys, electronics, machinery, medical devices, and personal protective equipment. The specific requirements vary depending on the product category and are often detailed in specific EU directives and regulations. Manufacturers must ensure their products comply with all applicable legislation before affixing the CE mark and placing the product on the market. This typically involves a conformity assessment procedure, which can range from self-declaration by the manufacturer to assessment by a Notified Body (an independent organization designated by an EU country).

Once a product is CE marked, it can be freely traded within the EEA. Member states cannot restrict the sale of products bearing the CE mark unless they can prove the product does not meet the essential requirements. The CE mark signifies the product's compliance with EU standards and facilitates its movement across borders within the single market.
