The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that the product complies with all applicable EU legislation and for drawing up the necessary documentation. This typically includes a Declaration of Conformity and a technical file. If a product requires a conformity assessment by a Notified Body, that body's identification number will appear alongside the CE marking.

The CE marking allows products to be freely traded within the EEA. Member states of the EEA cannot prohibit or restrict the sale of products bearing the CE marking, provided they comply with the relevant directives. The presence of the CE marking signifies that the product meets the essential requirements of the applicable EU directives and has undergone the appropriate conformity assessment procedure.
