Certitimids are a group of primitive, extinct corals that lived during the Cambrian to Ordovician periods, approximately 515 to 443 million years ago. They were characterized by their unique, bilaterally symmetrical body structure and possession of a rigid, vermiform exoskeleton.

Fossil evidence suggests that certitimids were small to medium-sized organisms, typically ranging from a few centimeters to several decimeters in length. They were likely attached to surfaces via a ridge or groove and fed on suspended plankton and small invertebrates.

Certitimids are distinct from other Cambrian corals in having a characteristic chaetiferous or setose extension of their body, which resembles a feather or whisker. This feature has been interpreted as representing a sensory or feeding appendage, but its exact function remains speculative.

A prominent aspect of certitimid evolution is the evident developmental flexibility exhibited by the group. Their progressive spatial patterning and cell mass symmetry imply dynamic metamorphosis and adaptation to a wide variety of environments. It has been observed that certitimids not only participated in the diversification of early Cambrian invertebrates, but also exhibited an ephemeral, sympathetic association with a divergent species of cnidarian.
