CENELECs

CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, is a European standardization organization that develops voluntary European standards for electrical, electronic, and related technologies. It is one of the three main European standardization bodies in the European System for Standardization, alongside CEN (general standards) and ETSI (telecommunications). CENELEC standards are intended to improve safety, interoperability, and market access across Europe and are recognized by the European Union and the European Free Trade Association.

Founded in 1955, CENELEC coordinates the work of national electrotechnical standardization bodies from European countries. Its activities are organized through technical committees and working groups, whose members come from national institutes, industry, and other stakeholders. The result of these efforts is published as European Standards (ENs). When an EN is harmonized with EU product directives, it can provide a presumption of conformity for CE marking, facilitating market entry and regulatory compliance.

CENELEC maintains a close relationship with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Many European standards are harmonized versions of IEC International Standards or adopted with adaptations to European needs, helping align regional and international norms.

Membership comprises national electrotechnical standardization bodies from European states. Through these bodies, CENELEC covers a broad range of sectors, including electrical safety, energy efficiency, electromagnetic compatibility, and information technology equipment. The organization thus plays a central role in shaping the European marketplace for electrical and electronic products and services.
