The Balkans, also known as the Balkan Peninsula, is a geographical and cultural region in southeastern Europe. The region is bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the northwest, the Ionian Sea to the southwest, the Aegean Sea to the south and southeast, and the Black Sea to the east. The Balkans are often considered to extend from the eastern edge of the Italian Peninsula and the Adriatic Sea in the west to the Black Sea and the borders of Turkey and Greece in the east.
