Byggnadsorientering, a Swedish term, translates to building orientation. It refers to the practice of carefully considering the placement and orientation of a building in relation to its surrounding environment, particularly its geographical location and the path of the sun. This concept is fundamental in architecture and urban planning, influencing various aspects of a building's design and performance.

The primary goal of proper building orientation is to optimize natural resources. By strategically positioning a building, architects can maximize beneficial sunlight penetration for heating and natural light, while minimizing unwanted solar gain during hotter periods. This is achieved by understanding solar paths throughout the year and adjusting window placement, building shape, and facade design accordingly. For example, in colder climates, larger windows might be oriented towards the south to capture winter sun, while in warmer climates, overhangs and smaller windows on east and west facades can reduce summer heat.
