Bußgeldbescheide

A Bußgeldbescheid, often translated as a fine notice or penalty order, is an official document issued in Germany by an administrative authority, most commonly the police or a municipal office. It informs an individual that they have committed a minor administrative offense, usually a traffic violation, and outlines the penalty imposed. These offenses are distinct from criminal offenses and are handled through a separate legal procedure.

The Bußgeldbescheid details the nature of the offense, such as speeding, illegal parking, or running a red light. It specifies the relevant legal provisions that were violated and states the prescribed fine (Bußgeld), and potentially administrative costs (Gebühren und Auslagen). The document also informs the recipient of their rights, including the option to object to the Bußgeldbescheid within a two-week period. This objection is known as an Einspruch.

If an objection is filed, the case may be forwarded to the competent court. If no objection is filed within the specified time limit, the Bußgeldbescheid becomes legally binding, and the penalty must be paid. Failure to pay the fine by the deadline can lead to further enforcement measures. The procedure for issuing and contesting a Bußgeldbescheid is governed by the German Administrative Offenses Act (Ordnungswidrigkeitengesetz).
