Brytningsvärde

Brytningsvärde, often abbreviated as BV, is a measure used in optics to quantify the refractive power of a lens. It is defined as the reciprocal of the focal length of the lens in meters. The formula to calculate brytningsvärde is:

where f is the focal length of the lens. A lens with a shorter focal length has a higher brytningsvärde, indicating a stronger refractive power.

Brytningsvärde is a positive value for converging lenses, which are used to focus light, and a negative value for diverging lenses, which spread light. The unit for brytningsvärde is the dioptre (D), named after the Dutch eye surgeon Johannes Franciscus Donders.

In optical prescriptions, brytningsvärde is used to specify the power of eyeglasses or contact lenses. For example, a prescription of +0.50 D indicates a lens with a brytningsvärde of 0.50 D, which has a focal length of 2 meters (1 / 0.50 = 2).
