Boraneammoniate

Boraneammoniate is a chemical compound with the formula (NH4)2[BNH4]Cl. It is a borane complex that contains four ammonium ions and one B-N-H4 ion.

The compound is synthesized through the reaction of borane with aqueous ammonium chloride. This reaction is as follows: B2H6 + 2NH4Cl + 2H2O → (NH4)2[BNH4]Cl + 2HCl + BH4Cl.

Boraneammoniate is a molecular solid with a high gas-gas heat of fusion. It is widely used as a reagent in the production of metal borides and as a reagent in the synthesis of boron-containing compounds.

From a structural standpoint, boraneammoniate consists of two ammonium cations, one B-N-H4 anion, and one chloride anion per formula unit. The B-N-H4 anion has a planar triangular geometry with the boron atom at the apex.

Boraneammoniate is a highly hygroscopic compound, meaning that it is highly reactive to water and will readily absorb moisture from the air. It is typically stored under an inert atmosphere to prevent hydrolysis.

Dr. Milton Stewart first characterized the boraneammoniate compound in the early 1950s. Since then, numerous studies have been conducted to elucidate the chemistry of this compound. Further research has expanded our understanding of the properties and applications of boraneammoniate. Despite this, boraneammoniate remains a niche chemical with limited accessibility.
