Boostregulatorer, also known as step-up converters, are a type of switched-mode power supply (SMPS) that can increase a DC voltage to a higher DC voltage. They are widely used in electronic devices where a lower input voltage, such as from a battery, needs to be converted to a higher voltage required by other components. The fundamental principle of a boost regulator involves storing energy in an inductor and then releasing it to the output at a higher voltage.

The core components of a basic boost regulator include an inductor, a switching element (typically a MOSFET), a diode, and a capacitor. When the switch is closed, current flows through the inductor, storing energy. When the switch is opened, the inductor's magnetic field collapses, inducing a voltage that adds to the input voltage. The diode directs this combined voltage to the output capacitor, which smooths out the voltage ripples, providing a stable higher DC output.

The output voltage of a boost regulator is controlled by the duty cycle of the switching element, which is the proportion of time the switch is on versus off. By adjusting the duty cycle, the regulator can maintain a constant output voltage even if the input voltage or the load current varies. This makes them essential for applications like portable electronics, LED lighting, and electric vehicles, where efficient voltage conversion is critical.
