Bolgar
Bolgar, also spelled Bolghar, is a historic site and town in the Spassky District of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. It lies on the left bank of the Volga River, near the modern town of Bolgar and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kazan. The site preserves the ruins of the medieval city of Bolgar, which served as the capital of Volga Bulgaria from roughly the 9th to the 13th centuries and functioned as a key political, commercial, and religious center along the Volga trade routes.
