Bohunice

Bohunice is a municipality located in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Brno, the region's capital. The town is situated in the valley of the Svratka River, within the broader landscape of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Bohunice is best known for its association with the Bohunice Nuclear Power Plant (Vyhladovská jaderná elektrárna), one of the most significant industrial facilities in the Czech Republic.

The nuclear power plant, which began operation in the 1980s, consists of two VVER-440 reactors, a type of pressurized water reactor developed in the Soviet Union. The facility has played a crucial role in the Czech energy sector, contributing to the country's electricity production. However, Bohunice has also faced scrutiny due to safety concerns and environmental impact, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, leading to international debates and inspections.

Beyond its industrial significance, Bohunice is a small, predominantly residential community with a population of around 2,500 people. The town features a mix of modern housing developments, particularly those associated with the nuclear plant, as well as some older residential areas. The local economy is largely dependent on the nuclear facility, though efforts have been made to diversify industrial and commercial activities.

Culturally, Bohunice retains a quiet, suburban character with limited historical landmarks. The town is well-connected by road and rail, providing easy access to Brno and other nearby cities.
