Bluraylevyistä, often referred to as Blu-ray discs, are a digital optical disc storage format. They were developed to replace the standard DVD format, offering significantly greater storage capacity and enabling higher definition video playback. A single-layer Blu-ray disc can hold approximately 25 gigabytes of data, while a dual-layer disc can store around 50 gigabytes. This increased capacity is crucial for storing high-definition video and audio content, which requires more data than standard definition.

Blu-ray discs utilize a blue-violet laser with a shorter wavelength (405 nanometers) to read and write data. This contrasts with the red laser used by DVDs (650 nanometers). The shorter wavelength allows for smaller pits and lands on the disc surface, enabling data to be packed more densely. This technology was developed by Sony and introduced to the market in 2006.

The primary advantage of Blu-ray over DVD is its ability to support full high-definition (1080p) resolution and advanced audio codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. This results in a superior viewing and listening experience for movies and other multimedia content. Blu-ray discs are also used for storing video games, software, and other digital data requiring large storage capacities.
