Blechproben

Blechproben are small specimens cut from sheet metal used for experimental testing in materials science and engineering. They are intended to be representative of the parent material, including its thickness, chemical composition and thermomechanical state, and are prepared to minimize introduced artifacts.

Materials and preparation: Sheets of steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, titanium and other alloys can be used. The specimen geometry and cutting method depend on the intended test; common methods include shearing, sawing, waterjet or laser cutting. Care is taken to avoid excessive deformation and to control the surface finish; heat-affected zones may be removed or specified.

Applications and testing methods: Blechproben are used for mechanical testing (tensile, hardness, fatigue), formability assessment (bending, cupping tests), metallographic analysis (macroscopic and microscopic examination of grain structure after etching), and corrosion or wear testing (salt spray, electrochemical methods) to evaluate corrosion resistance and surface interactions.

Standards and interpretation: Tests follow international and national standards (ISO, DIN, ASTM) which specify specimen size, orientation, testing conditions, and reporting. Results are interpreted to infer material properties of the sheet and to compare batch to batch.

Limitations: Because sheet metals are anisotropic due to rolling directions, properties measured on a Blechprobe may depend on orientation and location on the sheet; consistent sampling is important.
