Bishkek
Bishkek is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan. Located in the Chuy Valley, at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains, it is a modern city with a Soviet-era architectural style. The city was founded in 1825 as a Khokand fortress named Pishpek. It was later conquered by the Russian Empire and renamed Frunze in honor of Soviet military leader Mikhail Frunze. After Kyrgyzstan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the city was renamed Bishkek.
