Biosicherheitszonen

Biosicherheitszonen, also known as biocontainment zones, are designated areas where biological agents, toxins, or pathogens are contained to prevent their spread and minimize the risk to human health and the environment. These zones are classified based on the potential hazard posed by the biological agents present, ranging from low to high risk. The classification system typically includes four levels:

Level 1: Minimal risk. This zone is used for work with non-pathogenic agents or those with low infectivity.

Level 2: Low risk. This zone is used for work with agents that have low infectivity and low potential for transmission.

Level 3: Moderate risk. This zone is used for work with agents that have moderate infectivity and potential for transmission, but are not highly contagious.

Level 4: High risk. This zone is used for work with highly contagious agents that pose a significant risk to human health.

Biosicherheitszonen are designed to protect both the workers handling the biological agents and the surrounding environment. They typically include physical barriers, ventilation systems, and personal protective equipment to minimize the risk of exposure. The design and operation of these zones are regulated by national and international guidelines to ensure the safety of workers and the public.
