Biokammare

Biokammare, translated as bio chamber, is a sealed, environmentally controlled enclosure used to house biological materials under defined conditions. In laboratory and industrial settings, biokammare enable researchers to culture, incubate, or observe cells, tissues, microorganisms, or small organisms while minimizing contamination and maintaining consistent environmental parameters.

Typical features include temperature control, humidity regulation, and mechanisms to regulate gas composition such as CO2 and O2 levels. Many biokammare have filtration systems, antimicrobial surfaces, and sensors for monitoring temperature, humidity, and gas concentrations, with data logging to document conditions over time. The chambers are designed to be easily cleaned and sterilized, using materials compatible with autoclaving or chemical sterilants.

Variants and configurations range from CO2 incubators used for mammalian cell culture to plant growth chambers that control light, temperature, humidity, and gas composition, as well as microbial incubators with specific temperature profiles. Some systems integrate robotic handling, sterile transfer ports, or isolators to support more advanced or high-containment work.

Applications span basic biological research, tissue engineering, microbiology, plant science, and pharmaceutical development. Operators typically follow aseptic technique, proper waste disposal, and containment guidelines appropriate to the biosafety considerations of the work. In Swedish usage, biokammare denotes a controlled-environment chamber for biological work, and the term may be translated or specified as incubator, growth chamber, or similar device depending on the function.
