Biojätteeseen

Biojätteeseen is the illative form of biojäte in Finnish, meaning "into the bio-waste" or "to the organic waste bin." It is used on signs and instructions to guide residents to place appropriate waste into the organic collection.

Organic waste typically includes fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, bread, pasta and cereal leftovers, and plant clippings. The exact items accepted vary by municipality; in many places meat, fish, dairy products, fats, oils, bones, and heavily liquid foods are not allowed or are restricted, to minimize odors and pest problems.

Collected biojätte is transported to composting or anaerobic digestion facilities, where microorganisms convert the waste into compost, soil amendments, energy, or digestate. The end products may be used in agriculture, landscaping, or energy generation, contributing to a circular economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.

To keep contamination low, residents should follow local guidelines, use sealed bins, drain liquids, and avoid adding non-organic waste. Some programs require the use of bio bags that meet specific standards, while others accept loose waste if properly contained. The handling rules are determined by the municipality and may change over time.
