Bioakkumulálódik

Bioakkumulálódik is a Hungarian term that translates to "bioaccumulates" in English. It refers to the process by which a substance or chemical, such as a toxin or pesticide, is absorbed by an organism at a rate greater than that at which it is lost by catabolism and excretion. This leads to a buildup of the substance in the organism's tissues over time.

Bioaccumulation can occur through various pathways, including ingestion of contaminated food or water, absorption through the skin, or inhalation of airborne particles. Organisms that are higher up in the food chain are particularly susceptible to bioaccumulation. This is because they consume multiple organisms that have already accumulated the substance, leading to an even higher concentration in their own bodies. This phenomenon is known as biomagnification.

Substances that bioaccumulate are often persistent in the environment and resistant to degradation. Common examples include heavy metals like mercury and lead, as well as certain pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The accumulation of these substances in organisms can have detrimental effects on their health, leading to a range of problems from reproductive issues to neurological damage.
