Binääritiedostoissa refers to binary files in Finnish. Unlike text files, which store human-readable characters, binary files contain data that is not directly interpretable as text. This data is represented in the computer's native binary format, using sequences of 0s and 1s.

Binary files can store a wide variety of information, including images, audio, video, executable programs, compressed archives, and structured data used by specific applications. The interpretation of the data within a binary file depends entirely on the program or system that created it and is intended to read it. For example, a JPEG image file has a specific structure that an image viewer understands to reconstruct the visual representation, while an executable program file contains machine code that the processor can execute.

When opening a binary file in a text editor, the content will appear as a jumble of seemingly random characters, control codes, and potentially some readable text fragments. This is because the text editor attempts to interpret the raw binary data as character codes, which it is not designed to do. Specialized software is required to correctly process and display the information contained within binary files. The distinction between text and binary files is fundamental to how computers store and manage different types of data.
