Bimetallism is an economic system in which a country’s currency is backed by and convertible into two metals, most commonly gold and silver. The term derives from the Latin *bi-* (meaning "two") and *metallum* (meaning "metal"). This monetary policy contrasts with monometallism, where a single metal—typically gold—serves as the standard.

The concept of bimetallism emerged in the 18th century as a response to the perceived instability of paper money and the limitations of gold-based systems. Proponents argued that linking currency to two metals could stabilize prices, as the value of each metal fluctuated independently. Under a bimetallic standard, coins were minted in both metals, and their exchange rate was fixed by law. For example, a silver dollar might be worth the same as a gold coin, even if their intrinsic metal values differed.

Bimetallism gained prominence during the 19th century, particularly in the United States, where advocates like William Jennings Bryan championed its adoption. The U.S. briefly operated under a modified bimetallic system through the Coinage Act of 1873, which demonetized silver while maintaining gold as the primary standard. However, the failure of the system to prevent economic instability—such as the deflationary pressures of the 1890s—led to its decline.

Critics of bimetallism argued that the system was impractical due to the difficulty of maintaining a fixed exchange rate between the two metals. If one metal became more valuable relative to the other, the currency could lose credibility, as holders might prefer the more valuable metal. Additionally, the limited supply of silver compared to gold made it difficult to sustain a stable bimetallic ratio.

By the early 20th century, most countries abandoned bimetallism in favor of gold standards or fiat currency systems. Today, bimetallism is largely a historical concept, though some modern proposals have revisited the idea as a potential solution to monetary instability. The principle of bimetallism remains relevant in discussions about monetary reform and alternative currency models.
