BijvTEU

BijvTEU is a term encountered in some Dutch-language logistics discussions and teaching materials to denote a TEU value used as an example. The abbreviation “bijv.” stands for “bijvoorbeeld,” meaning “for example.” BijvTEU is not an official unit or measurement in international shipping, and it should not be treated as a formal quantity in official reporting without explicit clarification.

TEU, or Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, is the standard measure of containerized cargo capacity. It is based on a 20-foot-long container; a 40-foot container is equivalent to 2 TEU. ISO 668 defines the dimensions and capacity conventions for standard containers. TEU is widely used to express port throughput, fleet capacity, and global trade volumes.

In practice, bijvTEU may appear in datasets, worksheets, or instructional materials as a placeholder value to illustrate how TEU counts are read, calculated, or compared. For example, a field labeled bijvTEU might be set to a small integer (such as 1, 3, or 5) to demonstrate how dataset computations or charts would look, without tying the example to real shipment data. It is important to recognize that such usage does not reflect actual cargo or operational metrics.

If encountered in a report or analysis, bijvTEU should be interpreted as a non-binding example value or a teaching aid unless the author specifies that it represents a real quantity. For formal reporting, use standard TEU figures and clearly distinguish example values from actual measurements.
