Bevegelsessykdom, commonly known as motion sickness, is a sensory disorder characterized by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and cold sweats. It occurs when there is a conflict between the sensory information received by the brain from the eyes, inner ears, and proprioceptors (sensors in muscles and joints). This mismatch can arise during travel in cars, boats, airplanes, or even while experiencing virtual reality.

The inner ear's vestibular system plays a crucial role in motion sickness. It detects motion and changes in orientation, but when the visual input contradicts this information, the brain can become confused. For example, while in a car, your eyes might perceive stillness inside the vehicle, but your inner ear detects the car's movement. This discrepancy is thought to trigger the symptoms.

Symptoms typically include feeling unwell, a general sense of uneasiness, and in more severe cases, vomiting. While most people recover quickly once the motion stops, some may experience lingering effects. Children between the ages of 2 and 12 are particularly susceptible, and pregnant women and individuals prone to migraines may also experience it more frequently.

Preventative measures and treatments exist. Staying focused on the horizon, avoiding reading or looking at screens during travel, and ensuring good ventilation can help. Medications, such as antihistamines and scopolamine patches, are also effective in preventing or reducing symptoms. Acupressure bands worn on the wrists are another popular non-medicinal approach.
