Betonikerros

Betonikerros, also known as concrete corrosion, refers to the deterioration of concrete structures due to chemical reactions between the concrete and its environment. This process can significantly reduce the structural integrity and service life of concrete infrastructure. The primary cause of betonikerros is the presence of chloride ions, which can penetrate the concrete through various means such as de-icing salts, seawater, or industrial processes. When chloride ions reach the reinforcing steel embedded within the concrete, they initiate a series of electrochemical reactions that lead to the corrosion of the steel. This corrosion results in the formation of rust, which expands and exerts pressure on the surrounding concrete, causing cracks and spalling. The extent of betonikerros can be influenced by factors such as the quality of the concrete mix, the environmental conditions, and the level of maintenance. Regular inspection and maintenance, including the application of protective coatings and the use of corrosion inhibitors, can help mitigate the effects of betonikerros and prolong the lifespan of concrete structures.
