Betegszabadságokat, often translated as sick leave or sick pay, refers to the entitlement of an employee to be absent from work due to illness or injury and still receive some form of compensation. In Hungary, the concept is governed by specific legislation that outlines the conditions, duration, and payment rates for sick leave.

To be eligible for betegszabadság, an employee must typically provide a medical certificate from a doctor confirming their inability to work. The duration of sick leave can vary depending on the severity and nature of the illness, as well as the employee's employment contract and collective agreements.

The compensation during sick leave is usually a percentage of the employee's regular salary. The exact percentage and the number of days covered are determined by Hungarian labor law and social security regulations. Generally, the employer is responsible for paying sick pay for a certain period, after which the social security system may take over or the employee might be eligible for other forms of state support if the illness is prolonged.

There are also provisions for specific situations, such as occupational diseases or work-related injuries, which may have different rules regarding sick leave and compensation. The system aims to provide a safety net for employees who are temporarily unable to perform their duties due to health reasons, ensuring they do not suffer complete financial loss during their recovery.
