Beszédhangkészlete, often translated as "speech sound inventory" or "phonemic inventory," refers to the complete set of distinct speech sounds that are used in a particular language. This inventory is fundamental to understanding the phonology of a language, which is the system of sounds that differentiate meaning. For instance, in English, the sounds /p/ and /b/ are part of the speech sound inventory and, when swapped, can change the meaning of a word (e.g., "pat" vs. "bat").

Each language has its own unique inventory of consonants and vowels. Some sounds might be common across many languages, while others are specific to a particular linguistic tradition. For example, the click consonants found in some Southern African languages are not present in the inventory of most European languages. The study of speech sound inventories is crucial for linguists, speech therapists, and language learners. It helps in analyzing language acquisition in children, diagnosing and treating speech impediments, and developing effective language teaching methodologies.

The concept also extends to individual speakers.
