Bestandsreservierung, also known as inventory reservation or stock reservation, is a process within inventory management where a specific quantity of goods is set aside for a particular purpose or customer. This prevents the reserved stock from being allocated to other orders or uses. The primary goal is to ensure that the required items are available when needed, avoiding stockouts for critical orders or production processes.

There are several scenarios where bestandsreservierung is applied. In e-commerce, it might be used to reserve stock for a customer's placed order until payment is confirmed or the item is ready for shipment. In manufacturing, raw materials or components can be reserved for a specific production order to guarantee uninterrupted production. Similarly, in retail, items for a special event or a wholesale order might be reserved.

The reservation typically involves updating inventory records to reflect the reserved quantity. This reserved stock is then excluded from available-to-promise (ATP) calculations, meaning it won't be offered to other potential buyers. Once the purpose of the reservation is fulfilled, such as shipping an order or completing production, the reserved stock is released and becomes available again.
