Bentoniittikivet

Bentoniittikivet are a type of rock formed from bentonite clay. Bentonite itself is primarily composed of montmorillonite, a clay mineral that swells significantly when exposed to water. This swelling property is a key characteristic of bentoniittikivet. The formation of bentonite typically occurs from the weathering of volcanic ash or rock. When volcanic ash settles in water, the glass shards within it alter to form montmorillonite and other clay minerals. Over geological time, these clay deposits can consolidate and lithify into bentoniittikivet.

The appearance of bentoniittikivet can vary but they are often greenish, grayish, or yellowish in color. Their texture can be smooth or slightly gritty. Due to the montmorillonite content, bentoniittikivet possess a high cation exchange capacity, meaning they can readily absorb and release ions. This characteristic makes them useful in various industrial applications.

Historically, bentoniittikivet have been used as a binding agent in the production of ceramics and as a purifier for oils and wines. Their absorbent nature also lends itself to applications in drilling muds, where they help to lubricate drill bits and stabilize boreholes. In more recent times, bentoniittikivet have found use in cat litter due to their excellent clumping and odor-absorbing properties. Their ability to absorb large amounts of liquid and form a solid mass when wet makes them an effective and popular material for this purpose.
