Benmärgsaktivitet refers to the biological processes occurring within the bone marrow. The bone marrow is a spongy tissue found inside bones that is responsible for producing blood cells. This production, known as hematopoiesis, involves the differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells into various types of blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen, white blood cells fight infection, and platelets help in blood clotting.

The level of bone marrow activity can be an indicator of a person's health. Increased activity might be seen in response to blood loss or infection, as the body ramps up production to compensate. Conversely, decreased activity can be a sign of certain medical conditions, such as aplastic anemia, where the bone marrow fails to produce enough blood cells, or leukemia, where abnormal white blood cells proliferate uncontrollably.

A bone marrow biopsy, where a small sample of marrow is extracted, allows for direct examination of cell types and their production rates. Blood tests can also provide indirect clues about bone marrow function by measuring the levels of different blood cells in circulation.
