Beherbergung is a term used in German-speaking contexts to denote the provision of lodging or accommodation to guests for a temporary period. The word derives from the verb beherbergen, meaning to shelter or harbor someone. In tourism and hospitality, Beherbergung encompasses a range of facilities and arrangements that offer a place to sleep and basic services, including hotels, inns, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, hostels, vacation rentals, and camping sites with rental units. It can also refer to institutional or organized forms of accommodation, such as housing for students, refugees, or disaster‑response shelters, when they are used to house people temporarily.

Beherbergung is a central element of the hospitality industry and is systematically tracked in tourism statistics and planning in many German-speaking countries. Facilities providing Beherbergung are typically subject to local licensing, safety and hygiene regulations, and consumer protection rules, as well as taxation regimes such as the local lodging tax. In many jurisdictions, hosts and accommodations are also required to register overnight guests with local authorities, a practice known as Meldepflicht in Germany.

The term emphasizes the temporary nature of the stay, distinguishing Beherbergung from longer‑term housing. It plays a key role in economic activity, regional development, and event tourism, as well as in social policy during crises when temporary housing is organized for displaced persons or visitors.
