Bastnäsite-(Y) is a rare mineral belonging to the bastnäsite group of carbonate fluorides. Its chemical formula is (Y,Ce)CO3F. It is characterized by the presence of yttrium as the dominant rare earth element, although cerium is typically present in significant amounts as well. Other rare earth elements can also substitute in the structure. Bastnäsite-(Y) often occurs as small, prismatic to acicular crystals, sometimes with a tabular habit. Its color can range from pale yellow to reddish-brown or even colorless. The mineral is typically found in low-grade metamorphic rocks, such as marbles and skarns, and in pegmatites associated with alkaline intrusions. It can also be found in hydrothermal veins. Notable occurrences include localities in Norway, Greenland, and China. Due to its rarity and the dispersed nature of yttrium within the crystal structure, bastnäsite-(Y) is not considered a primary economic source of yttrium or other rare earth elements. It is more often found in association with other rare earth minerals, such as other bastnäsite group members or monazite.
