Basepaarittamalla is a term that refers to the process of base pairing in molecular biology. This fundamental interaction occurs between nucleotide bases within a DNA or RNA molecule. Specifically, adenine (A) pairs with thymine (T) in DNA, and adenine (A) pairs with uracil (U) in RNA. Guanine (G) always pairs with cytosine (C) in both DNA and RNA. These pairings are dictated by the chemical structure of the bases, forming hydrogen bonds that hold the two strands of a DNA double helix together or allow RNA molecules to fold into specific secondary structures.

The specificity of base pairing is crucial for many biological processes. In DNA replication, the complementary base pairing ensures that each new DNA strand is an accurate copy of the original. During transcription, base pairing between DNA and RNA nucleotides allows for the synthesis of messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules that carry genetic information from the DNA to the ribosomes. In translation, the sequence of codons in mRNA is read by transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules, whose anticodons base pair with the mRNA codons, bringing the correct amino acids to the ribosome for protein synthesis.

The stability of these base pairs, particularly the three hydrogen bonds between G and C compared to the two between A and T, influences the melting temperature and overall stability of nucleic acid duplexes.
