Barorezeption

Baroreception is the process by which the body perceives changes in blood pressure. It is mediated by baroreceptors, specialized sensory receptors located in walls of the aorta, carotid arteries and other large arteries. These receptors detect stretches and changes in intraluminal pressure within the vessels, transmitting this information to the brainstem via the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves.

In response to elevated blood pressure, baroreceptors are activated, leading to stimulation of the nucleus tractus solitarii and other brainstem centers. This, in turn, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to decreased sympathetic tone, vasodilation, and a decrease in heart rate. As a result, blood pressure is lowered. Conversely, in response to decreased blood pressure, baroreceptors are inhibited, causing an increase in sympathetic tone, vasoconstriction, and an increase in heart rate.

Baroreception plays a crucial role in maintaining blood pressure homeostasis. It provides a rapid and autonomic response to changes in blood pressure, preventing overloading of the cardiovascular system in the event of hypertension, and thus protecting against damage to the brain, heart, and kidneys. Abnormalities in baroreception have been implicated in various conditions, including hypertension, orthostatic hypotension syndrome, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

In addition to their role in blood pressure regulation, baroreceptors also contribute to our sense of awareness of position and movement, known as vestibular function, through their convergence on the same neural pathways as the vestibular system. Research into baroreception has significant implications for the development of novel therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular diseases, and continues to be an area of active investigation in neuroscience and physiology.
