Bareun

Bareun was a conservative political party in South Korea that existed from 2015 to 2017. It was formed by lawmakers who split from the Saenuri Party, seeking a reformist, principle-based approach within conservatism. The name Bareun, meaning upright or correct, signaled an intention to present a reform-minded alternative within the conservative spectrum.

Ideology and positions

Bareun identified as conservative with a reformist edge. Its platform emphasized anti-corruption, rule of law, fiscal prudence, and market-friendly policies. On foreign policy, it supported a close alliance with the United States and pursued a pragmatic approach to North Korea within the framework of security and alliance commitments. The party also advocated political reform and governance improvements aimed at reducing corruption and improving accountability.

History

The party emerged in 2015 when a faction of the Saenuri Party left to form a separate political vehicle. It sought to differentiate itself from the incumbent party while maintaining core conservative principles. Bareun participated in national elections as a distinct conservative option, aiming to appeal to voters seeking reform within conservatism.

Merger and legacy

In 2018, Bareun merged with the People Party to form Bareunmirae Party, creating a centrist-conservative entity. The Bareun name ceased to operate as a standalone party after the merger, and many of its members eventually joined other parties or factions within the conservative bloc. The Bareunmirae Party itself later dissolved, with members dispersing to different political camps, including those aligned with the main conservative parties in South Korea.
