Balsham

Balsham is a village and civil parish in the South Cambridgeshire district of Cambridgeshire, England. It is situated about 10 miles east of Cambridge and 3 miles west of Linton. The village lies in the Cambridgeshire Fens, an area of low-lying land. The River Granta flows through the parish.

The Domesday Book of 1086 records Balsham as "Balsame". The name is believed to derive from Old English, possibly meaning "balm-tree" or "valley of the balm-tree". Historically, Balsham was an agricultural village.

The parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, is a Grade I listed building and is notable for its large size and elaborate stonework, particularly the chancel. The church has a long history, with parts dating back to the 13th century.

Balsham has a primary school, a village hall, and a few local amenities. The village is a residential community with many of its inhabitants commuting to Cambridge for work. The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for walking and cycling. Balsham is part of the electoral ward of Sawston and has a parish council responsible for local governance.
