The Balkan Mountains, known in Bulgarian as Stara Planina and in Serbian as Stara Planina, form a significant mountain range in the Balkan Peninsula. They extend across Bulgaria from the Serbian border in the west to the Black Sea coast in the east. The range is approximately 550 kilometers (340 miles) long and an average of 50 kilometers (31 miles) wide.

Geologically, the Balkan Mountains are part of the larger Balkanides mountain system. They are primarily composed of sedimentary rocks, including limestone, sandstone, and shale, with some areas of volcanic origin. The highest peak in the range is Botev Peak, reaching 2,376 meters (7,795 feet) above sea level, located in the central part of the mountains.

The mountain range plays a crucial role in Bulgaria's geography and climate. It acts as a natural barrier, dividing the country into northern and southern regions and influencing weather patterns. The northern slopes generally receive more precipitation than the southern ones. The mountains are also a vital source of water for many Bulgarian rivers, including the Iskar and Yantra.

The Balkan Mountains are characterized by diverse flora and fauna. Forests, primarily beech and oak, cover much of the lower and middle altitudes, while higher elevations feature alpine meadows and sparse vegetation. The area is home to various animal species, including brown bears, wolves, chamois, and numerous bird species.

Historically, the Balkan Mountains have served as a natural defense, with numerous passes facilitating limited east-west movement. They have also been a refuge during various historical periods. Today, the mountains are a popular destination for hiking, mountaineering, and ecotourism, with several national parks and protected areas preserving their natural beauty and biodiversity.
