Bakteerilaskelmat, also known as bacterial biofilms, are complex communities of microorganisms that adhere to surfaces and are embedded in a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). These structures are composed of bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotic microorganisms, along with their extracellular DNA and various inorganic materials. Biofilms are found in various environments, including medical devices, industrial equipment, and natural surfaces like teeth and soil.

The formation of biofilms involves several stages: initial attachment of microorganisms to a surface, followed by the production of EPS, which creates a protective barrier. This barrier allows the biofilm to resist environmental stresses and host defenses. Within the biofilm, microorganisms can exhibit altered gene expression and metabolic activity, leading to increased resistance to antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents.

Biofilms play a significant role in both beneficial and detrimental contexts. In the human body, they are essential for maintaining oral health and preventing infections. However, they are also responsible for many medical infections, such as those associated with indwelling medical devices and chronic wounds. In industrial settings, biofilms can cause biofouling, leading to increased energy consumption and maintenance costs in processes like heat exchange and water treatment.

Research into bacterial biofilms focuses on understanding their formation, structure, and function, as well as developing strategies to control or harness their properties. Techniques such as confocal laser scanning microscopy and atomic force microscopy are used to study the three-dimensional architecture of biofilms. Additionally, efforts are underway to design antimicrobial surfaces and develop novel therapies to combat biofilm-associated infections.
