Bajans

Bajans are people who are from Barbados or of Barbadian descent. The term Bajan is the demonym used for citizens of Barbados, an island nation in the Caribbean.

Barbados sits in the Lesser Antilles, east of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The capital and largest city is Bridgetown. Barbados gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1966 and became a republic in 2021, while remaining a member of the Commonwealth.

English is the official language. A locally spoken Bajan Creole or dialect is common in everyday speech and media, reflecting the island's African and Caribbean heritage.

The population is about 300,000. The majority of Bajans are of African descent, with small numbers of other groups. The economy is dominated by tourism and international business, with sports, culture, and crafts playing prominent roles.

Bajan culture features calypso and soca music, cricket, and distinctive cuisine such as flying fish and cou-cou. Notable Bajans include singer Rihanna and cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers, who are internationally recognized.
