A B-H curve, also known as a hysteresis loop, is a graphical representation of the relationship between the magnetic flux density (B) and the magnetic field strength (H) in a ferromagnetic material. When a magnetic field is applied to such a material, the magnetic domains within it align, causing a change in magnetic flux density. As the field strength is increased, the flux density also increases until it reaches saturation. When the field strength is decreased, the flux density does not follow the same path back to zero. Instead, it retains some magnetization, known as remanence. When the field is reversed, the flux density decreases, passes through zero, and eventually reaches saturation in the opposite direction. The area enclosed by the hysteresis loop represents the energy loss per unit volume of the material during each magnetization cycle.

B-H curves are crucial in the design and analysis of magnetic devices such as transformers, inductors, and electromagnets. The shape and size of the hysteresis loop provide information about the magnetic properties of the material, including its coercivity, remanence, and saturation flux density. Soft magnetic materials, used in applications where rapid magnetization and demagnetization are required, have narrow hysteresis loops, indicating low energy loss. Hard magnetic materials, used for permanent magnets, have wide hysteresis loops, indicating high remanence and coercivity, which allows them to retain their magnetism.
