Béjart

Maurice Béjart (1927–2007) was a French-born Swiss choreographer and dancer who helped shape contemporary ballet in the second half of the 20th century. He founded the Ballet du XXe siècle in 1960 in Brussels, a company renowned for ambitious reinterpretations of classical repertoire and for blending ballet with modern dance and diverse cultural influences. In 1987 he established Béjart Ballet Lausanne in Switzerland, which continued his repertory and artistic philosophy after his death.

Béjart's choreographic language combined precise classical technique with theatricality, muscularity, and expressive storytelling. He favored large ensembles, dynamic groupings, and a vivid, highly musical approach, often reimagining myths, religious narratives, and literary themes for contemporary audiences. His works are noted for dramatic impact, strong stage presence, and collaborations with designers, composers, and artists from various disciplines. Notable works associated with Béjart include Nijinsky, Boléro, and The Rite of Spring, among many others.

His influence extended beyond his own companies: he helped popularize contemporary ballet in Europe, mentored generations of dancers, and inspired a wave of choreographers to broaden ballet's expressive range. Béjart died in 2007 in Lausanne. His legacy endures in the Béjart Ballet Lausanne and in the broader development of contemporary dance.
