Aðlögunarþörf

Aðlögunarþörf is an Icelandic term describing the degree to which an agent—an individual, community, organization, or ecosystem—must adjust to changes in its environment in order to maintain functioning, resilience, and well-being. It captures the demand placed on an entity to adapt, rather than the outcome of adaptation itself.

The concept is cross-disciplinary, appearing in psychology, education, organizational studies, public policy, and environmental science. In psychology and education, it may describe a student or worker’s need to acquire new skills, modify routines, or alter attitudes in response to transitions such as moving to a new school, changing jobs, or adopting new technologies. In ecology and climate science, it refers to the requirements for ecosystems or human communities to alter practices, infrastructure, or governance as climates, habitats, or demographics shift. In migration and social policy, aðlögunarþörf relates to the supports and resources needed to integrate into new social and economic environments.

Determinants of aðlögunarþörf include internal resources (skills, motivation, resilience) and external supports (education, social networks, institutional accommodations), as well as the magnitude and pace of environmental change.
