Auðæfi

Auðæfi is an Icelandic noun meaning wealth, riches, or property. It denotes material means of support and a person’s possessions, and by extension prosperity. In broader usage it can refer to the accumulation of assets that provide economic security for an individual, a family, or a community.

The term derives from Old Norse auðr, meaning wealth, combined with æfi, meaning life, property, or holdings. It is attested in medieval Icelandic and Norse literature and is used in sagas and legal prose to describe estates, wealth, and the resources that sustain households. Cognates appear across related North Germanic languages.

In modern Icelandic, auðæfi is relatively formal or literary, and is less common in everyday speech. More common synonyms include eignir (possessions, estates) and auð (wealth). Auðæfi can be used to discuss historical property, inheritance, or the national wealth of a country, as in phrases such as auðæfi þjóðarinnar.

Culturally, the concept reflects the role of landholding, livestock, and other material assets in the social and economic structure of medieval Iceland and Norse society. Legal and literary sources that treat property and inheritance sometimes frame a person’s auðæfi as part of their status and lineage.
