Augenrand

Augenrand, in human anatomy, refers to the free edge of the upper or lower eyelid along which the eyelashes emerge. It forms the border between the skin of the eyelid and the palpebral conjunctiva at the mucocutaneous junction and is visible as the lash line.

Anatomically the eyelid margin consists of anterior and posterior lamellae: the anterior lamella includes skin, subcutaneous tissue, and orbicularis oculi muscle; the posterior lamella comprises the tarsal plate and the palpebral conjunctiva. The ciliary margin is where the lashes arise. Glands located at the margin include the Meibomian glands within the tarsal plate with their orifices at the margin, and the accessory glands of Zeis and Moll surrounding the lash follicles.

Functionally, the Augenrand contributes to ocular protection and tear film stability. Blinking distributes tears from the lacrimal lake across the eye, aided by the lipid secretions of the Meibomian glands that drain through the margin.

Clinical significance: the eyelid margin is a common site of inflammatory and infectious disorders such as blepharitis, styes (hordeola), and chalazia. Examination typically notes margin redness, telangiectasia, lash misdirection, or misalignment of eyelashes (entropion, ectropion). Aesthetics and cosmetic procedures, including eyelash care and extensions, also focus on the margin.

These features define the Augenrand as the histological and functional border of the eyelid, with diagnostic and therapeutic relevance in ophthalmology.
