AudioTracks

An audiotrack is a discrete stream of audio data that forms part of a multimedia file or project. In video production and playback, it refers to an individual audio track that can be synchronized with video and other data tracks such as subtitles or captions. A file may contain several audiotracks—for example different language audio, director’s commentary, or alternate takes. Each track uses its own codec, sample rate, bit depth, and channel configuration.

In audio recording and digital audio workstations (DAWs), an audio track is a lane in a session that contains audio events. Tracks can be recorded, imported, muted, soloed, and processed with effects; they are mixed to create the final stereo or multichannel output.

Formats and containers: In a container format such as MP4, MKV, or WebM, multiple audio tracks can be stored as separate streams, and players let users switch between them. In pure audio files (WAV, AIFF, FLAC), a single track carries the waveform data, while some formats support embedded metadata or multiple channels. Some formats package multiple tracks as part of a single file.

Metadata and accessibility: Audio tracks include metadata such as title, language, artist, duration, and channel count. Multiple tracks can support accessibility features, including descriptive audio tracks for the visually impaired and translations for locales.

Licensing and rights: Distribution may require rights clearance for each track, especially when tracks include licensed music, sound effects, or dialogue. Proper attribution and licensing are essential for reuse.
