For example, in the sentence "Pekan auto" (Pekka's car), "Pekan" is in the genitive case and functions attributively, modifying "auto" to specify whose car it is. However, the attributive genitive can also express other relationships. It can indicate the origin or material of something, such as "puinen pöytä" (wooden table), where "puinen" is an adjective, but if it were "puun pöytä" (a table of wood), "puun" would be the genitive acting attributively.

Furthermore, the attributive genitive is used in partitive constructions when referring to a part of a whole, often translated as "some" or "of the." For instance, "Ostan leipää" (I buy bread, indefinite quantity) uses the partitive, but "Ostan palan leipää" (I buy a piece of bread) uses the genitive "leipää" attributively to modify "palan."
