Asymptootti is a Finnish word that translates to asymptote in English. An asymptote is a line that a curve approaches but never touches. In mathematics, asymptotes are particularly important in the study of functions and their graphs. They help describe the behavior of a function as its input approaches a certain value or infinity.

There are three main types of asymptotes: horizontal, vertical, and oblique. A horizontal asymptote indicates that the function's output gets arbitrarily close to a specific value as the input grows infinitely large or small. A vertical asymptote occurs at a point where the function's output tends towards positive or negative infinity. Asymptotes are found by analyzing the limits of a function. For horizontal asymptotes, one examines the limit as x approaches positive or negative infinity. For vertical asymptotes, one looks at the limit as x approaches a specific value where the function might be undefined, such as a denominator becoming zero. Oblique asymptotes are typically found in rational functions where the degree of the numerator is exactly one greater than the degree of the denominator.
