Astatino

Astatino is a hypothetical element with the symbol Atn and atomic number 120. It is predicted to be an alkaline earth metal, belonging to the seventh period and group 2 of the periodic table. As of now, astatino has not been synthesized or observed.

The element's existence is based on theoretical predictions and extrapolations from the properties of lighter elements in its group, such as radium. Like other transuranic elements, astatino is expected to be highly radioactive, with a very short half-life. Its chemical properties are anticipated to be similar to other group 2 elements, likely forming a +2 oxidation state.

Research into synthesizing superheavy elements like astatino involves bombarding heavy atomic nuclei with lighter ones in particle accelerators. The extreme instability and fleeting existence of such elements make their study challenging. Theoretical calculations suggest that elements beyond atomic number 118, the current end of the known periodic table, enter an "island of stability" where isotopes might have longer half-lives. Astatino is considered part of the predicted region beyond this island.

The discovery and characterization of astatino would significantly advance our understanding of nuclear physics and chemistry, particularly concerning the limits of nuclear stability and the applicability of periodic trends to extremely heavy elements. However, the experimental challenges in producing and detecting such an element remain substantial.
