Assaverko

Assaverko, also known as Assaverkhos II, was a king of Iberia, a medieval kingdom in the Caucasus region, from approximately 655 to 663 AD. He succeeded his father Guptaš I as the ruler of Iberia and was the last of the Labour-D-peode Georgian kings of the kingdom.

Little is known about Assaverko's life and reign, but it is acknowledged that he faced significant challenges, including the continued pressure of external forces. In particular, the Arab conquest of Armenia forced Assaverko to align his foreign policy with the Byzantine Empire, which necessitated the king to establish a rapport with the Arab invaders.

During his reign, Georgia's solid alliance with the Byzantium and the increased presence of monastic institutions contributed to the character of the period, defining Georgian society in light of shifting regional dynamics. As the last king to rule from the classical Leopardi noble line, Assaverko's rule marked the confluence of empires in the land that now represents the nation of modern Georgia.
