Arpinum

Arpinum, known in antiquity as Arpinum, is a comune in the Lazio region of central Italy. It corresponds to the modern town of Arpino, in the province of Frosinone. The town sits in the Apennine foothills near the Liri river valley, and its historic center preserves medieval and Renaissance architecture.

In antiquity Arpinum was a Volscian settlement that came under Roman influence in the early Republic. It is best known as the birthplace of Marcus Tullius Cicero, the eminent orator and statesman born in 106 BCE. Cicero’s family lineage and early education were associated with Arpinum before he pursued studies in Rome.

Over the centuries Arpinum developed as a small urban center within the Roman and later medieval territories, with fortifications and religious buildings that reflect its strategic hill-top position. The remains and archaeological sites around Arpino illustrate the long continuity of occupation.

Today Arpino is a modern municipality within the province of Frosinone. The town preserves historical monuments, parish churches, and cultural traditions of the Lazio countryside. The name Arpinum remains a historical reference used in classical texts to denote Cicero’s birthplace.
